The Colony of Atlantis

The USS Atlantis is named after a colony of Atlanteans that was established on Earth thousands of years ago and for hundreds of years was considered a myth. This colony, commonly referred to as the island of Atlantis, was actually a huge space ship with highly advanced floatation devices which allowed a vast portion of the outer hull to remain above sea level. From a distance, the ship looked like an advanced city on an island.

The colony flourished, and many Atlanteans interacted with the Earth humans and settled on small islands near Greece. These "interactions" produced offspring which looked completely human, but were mentally unstable and warlike. The descendants of these offspring later migrated to Northern Europe after the cataclysm.

The Atlantean colonists that remained on the ship were scientists and intellectuals. Many that enjoyed exploration of Earth's ocean used special prosthetic devices that covered their legs and went up to their waists for stability. These fin like devices looked like the tail fin of the dolphineans of Atlantea and were very efficient in long distance swimming and deep sea diving. The mystery of the "Mer-people" was later solved when Earth joined the Federation, and it was learned that "mermaids" and "mermen" were actually Atlanteans with prosthetic fins.

During the famous natural disaster that caused the legendary disappearance of Atlantis, the floatation mechanism was severely damaged and could not be repaired, not even in orbit. Earth was going through some radical natural changes, so the leaders of Atlantis decided to abandon the colony and return the ship to their home planet, Atlantea. Not all the Atlanteans agreed with this decision. Many stayed and found safe refuge in underwater caverns of the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. For centuries myth and mystery surrounded the missing island of Atlantis. With Earth joining the United Federation of Planets, came the realization that Atlanteans were living in Earth's oceans and many Europeans were their descendants.
