The History of the USS Atlantis The USS Atlantis, a Galaxy Class Starship, was constructed at the Federation shipyards orbiting the planet Atlantea. Atlantea is one of seven water planets located in a solar system a few light years from the Vulcan system. The crew is comprised mainly of Humans, Vulcans, and Atlanteans.There are two different species of Atlanteans represented. The humanoid species are human‑like in appearance except for the external gill slits located on the right and left areas of the lower back close to the internal lung areas. Their toes and fingers are slightly webbed to aide in swimming. These Atlanteans are at home both on land and in water. The other species is represented by only one member of the crew. His name is Lt. Triton. Lt. Triton is dolphin like and has lungs and blow hole for the breathing of air. This species is confined to a water environment, but has no gills. The dolphineans are highly intelligent and experts in communication. Lt. Triton is the communications officer, and his telepathic abilities surpasses the efficiency of the ship's universal translator. He has become an important aspect of diplomatic missions, and dangerous alien encounters. Lt. Triton's personal quarters, work area and recreational areas are located in the deck just below the ship's recreational deck. The Dolphineans deck is completely flooded with sea water which is constantly filtered and renewed on a molecular level. All of the instrumentation and com panels are especially made to function in this environment. Because of their ability to live under water, many Atlantean crew members work with Lt. Triton on this deck. The whole crew has the ability to interact directly with Lt. Triton and also enjoy this special environment. A portion of the recreation deck is open to the water deck below (Triton's rec area) in the form of an open beach. With the help of the advanced "holo-technology", this area has become the envy of many vacation worlds. Exploration has become one of the minor functions of the USS Atlantis. Because of the Atlantean ability to fool and "out‑smart" aggressors, a typical mission of this ship would be to accompany research or medical vessels which have limited fire‑power. The Atlantis is also often called to aide worlds which have gone through natural disasters. The Atlanteans are experts in this area, and their empathic/healing abilities have become an important part in the restoration of not only the health of the planet's inhabitants, but also the health of the planet's whole environment.
