    Captain's Log:

    High School Reunions: Try 40

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have gone by since High School but it has. It is a week before the weekend celebration and I was asked by the powers that be to write about my 40th reunion. First let’s talk about the anticipation and the format that I will use to present this essay. I believe I’ll use the log entry form so...

June 5th 2004 @ 1200 I begin the record ending on June 13th 2004. I am looking forward to the 2 day event and have gone so far as to reserve a hotel room for both Friday and Saturday night. The Reunion is to be held at the Omni Hotel in Dallas (635 & Luna Rd.). The Adamson class of 1964, winners of the School Spirit contest that Ron Chapman of KLIF radio (AM was the big deal then) put on for all the area high schools. Yes, we had cars and TV back then.

Adamson’s class of 64 was and is a close knit group and very friendly. I have thought a lot about the people that made up the senior class and have come to the conclusion they were cool.

My wife and I will attend both days from the informal Friday night get together by the pool and restaurant area to the Saturday night dinner and dance. I look forward to seeing old friends and dancing with all the girls-- it’s my job and it has to be done--I love it. Since it’s a week before the event I’ll be adding entrees as we get closer to the Reunion. I may make some predictions and then we will see how they turned out. Just put yourself in my shoes for awhile and imagine it happening to you. Do you have ex steady, old boyfriends for the ladies and old girlfriends for the gentleman? How have we changed? Wow, the endless thoughts– I’ll make another entree tomorrow.

June 6, 2004: RAIN, RAIN, RAIN.

    June 7, 2004: RAIN AGAIN

June 8, 2004: Working at the fire station (rain again)

June 9: why all this rain

June 10: the rain stopped for a while, the forecast for Friday and Saturday is good though.

June 11, Friday: 0530 went to fitness 2000 to work out, I’ve been working out more lately, wonder why? At 1130 hours my wife and I drive to Dallas Omni Hotel where the activities are to be held. We check in and run into several classmates doing the same. I rush to get my bags upstairs to our room and unpack so I can go down to the pool bar to see everyone. 1700 hours, gosh there are a lot of people here; I’m going to gab with friends I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

June 12, 2004: Last night was a blast – meeting with old and dear friends, finding out how things have been for all these dear people. My wife was so supportive and allowed me to visit of course she knows several of the people from other reunions. Some bad news, several (24) classmates have passed away. This evening is the major function for the two day event and I am so looking forward to it.

We spend our time visiting and being comfortable sharing with our friends– it is really hard putting into words the pleasure of being around these people and kinda looking fondly at our past.

June 13, 2004: Looking back on the reunion I feel the most important and lasting impression is that I really enjoyed just being around these people. We shared a common history from the sadness of a President being shot and the suspect being caught near our school to the highs of the state basketball tournament in Austin to winning the spirit contest against all the larger schools, The top pop radio station in Dallas at the time “KLIF” with Ron Chapman honored us with a huge party and we were entertained by Sony and Cher. You have to remember this was 40 years ago. We told stories of the past and we told stories of the present and caught up on how our lives had happened, our children and grand children etc. Seeing old friends and my Alpha Kappa buddies was a treat. Dancing the night away was special. After the music, food, dance, we went up to the Presidential Suite to talk and visit for a while longer.

Sunday: The next morning we breakfasted and talked some more. My conclusion is if you get a chance to see old friends and hang out for a while at a reunion, you must take it. It’s where wallflowers become Princesses and I just enjoyed it all tremendously.
