Class Summary:
Constellation Class starships were designed specifically for deep space assignments and diplomatic missions. At the time they were constructed, they were developed to be combat worthy of any vessels that the Romulan or Klingon Empires were creating. Few of these ships now remain in service and those that are still are used mostly as freighters and ferries.
Webmaster's Notes:
This class of vessel came about as a last minute decision. The U.S.S. Stargazer was originally supposed to be a Constitution Class vessel, however, before it made its onscreen appearance, the decision was made to change the Stargazer's class to a never before seen design. Since the episode "The Battle" had already been filmed and LeVar Burton mentions that the Stargazer is a Constitution Class ship in that show, the decision was made to call this new series Constellation Class because the two words are so similar and constellation could be easily dubbed over constitution.
