Class Summary:
Originally dubbed "the great experiment", the U.S.S. Excelsior was fit with transwarp engines. However, after attempting a major repair, it was discovered that the system was flawed beyond repair and the transwarp nacelles were subsequently replaced with standard warp engines. Due to their reliability thereafter, these vessels were constructed for nearly thirty-nine years.
