Lt. Commander David Perez, our Chief Engineer, died November 23, 2003, Sunday morning at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, CA, from an ongoing illness that finally took his life.  His death was unexpected, even though his illness had taken a turn for the worse in the later part of 2003.  Below are the words of sympathy and condolence from his second family, IFT, and pictures of him throughout the years.  We are deeply saddened by his passing and loved him as one of our own.

Sunday, November 23, 2003, 8:17 pm          Friends of David Perez

David Perez, our Chief Engineer aboard the USS Ulysses, passed away this Sunday morning at Desert Regional Hospital from complications due to illness.  David was a charter member aboard the Ulysses and his talent produced not only our logo, but the first Jurassic Trek logo and other work throughout the years.  He was a beloved member and one we were proud to have as a part of our ship.  His death comes as a shock and is completely unexpected.  His fighting spirit led us to believe we would have him for just that little bit longer.  Or so we hoped.  Please join us in remembering this man who was such an integral part of our ship and whom we had called, for a long time, our friend.

We love you, David.

Sunday, November 23, 2003 8:44 PM          Re: [uss_nathanhale] Friends of David Perez

The U.S.S. Nathan Hale Officers and Crew are extremely saddened to hear of the passing away of our friend of the Ulysses, David Perez. David had a wonderful imagination and a wonderful talent of drawing and creating logos. He looked like a true Federation Officer in his uniform and was true to the end, boldly going where no one has gone before. He was a Trekker and a friend. At Midnight, we will bring the Nathan Hale along side the Ulysses our sister ship. All running lights will be dimmed and a torpedo will be launched towards the horizon of the earth as we take a moment of silence. That is all. Gastineau out...

On behalf of the crew of the USS CENTURION and its Marine Strike Group, I would like to extend our sympathies for the loss of your Chief Engineer, David Perez.

I believe, if I am not mistaken, that we had a chance to meet David at a joint meeting some time ago after Trish had completed the flag for the Ulysses. He and Juanita were standing outside displaying the flag.

Always hard to lose a friend and a crewmate.

Monday, November 24, 2003 6:35 PM          Re: [GEO_V] Friends of David Perez

I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and sympathy.  We will miss David greatly and I have known him for as long as I have known this great Star Trek family.  David and I started out together aboard the Odyssey.  We met at the Anniversary party of the Odyssey that took place at John Cote's house.  That is where we met the crew of that ship and became a part of their family.  David and I moved up the ranks under the command of Charlotte Crandall and we both loved being a part of them.

As time went on we felt that it was time to start our own ship and we left the loving arms of our mother, the Odyssey, and created the USS Ulysses with the loving help of Pam Gengo and Mandy Ison.  David willingly filled the position of Chief Engineer aboard our newly christened Sovereign class ship and fulfilled every expectation I had of him.

I could always rely on his imagination and his drawing and these special talents will be sorely missed but most of all I will miss his wonderful attitude and his upbeat way of looking at everything.  He never saw something that he couldn't overcome and that was his strong point, and is what kept him going in the face of adversity.

I want to thank the crew of the Nathan Hale for their torpedo salute and also the crew of the Odyssey for joining in that solemn devotion to our beloved member.  Please join me, when you read this, in a moment of silence and possibly a prayer that David is piloting the great ship of the Universe for our own Gene Roddenberry.

Respectfully and sadly,

Juanita Gamble, Commodore

Commanding Officer, USS Ulysses

GEO 5 XO

Monday, November 24, 2003 8:23 PM          Ulysses Photo Tribute to David Perez

Here is a photo tribute to our lost Chief Engineer, David Perez.  He was an active member of the ship and participated in virtually every away mission.  These photos represent only a few of those taken of him over the years, but I hope they do him justice.

In case the attachment is stripped by the Yahoo Group settings, I have also uploaded the photo tribute to the Files section of these groups.  Look for DavidPerezCollage.gif.  I hope these pictures allow those of us who knew him to remember the good times that were shared with him.  In loving memory,

Tuesday, November 25, 2003 7:42 PM          [uss_nathanhale] in memory of David

I didn't know David very long but I found him to funny and very informative on things. We drove down to the studio with Dee at the last trek tour. Give my preys to his family and the many friends who care and love him. One question was their any charities that he or his family care for so we can sent money ?

IFT'S Tribute - Welcome To Federation Space

ENCODED SUB-SPACE TRANSMISSION FROM IFT COMMAND HEADQUARTERS ON STARDATE: 3965.9

It is with great sadness that we all mourn the passing of a dedicated Federation Officer.  David Perez lived the ideals that Gene Roddenberry instilled into IFT.  David exemplified those ideals and made them his own, spending his time making the world a better place.

David served as the Chief Engineer aboard the USS ULYSSES in Beaumont, California.  His smile and his dedication to the people aboard ULYSSES was truly a gift to the entire Federation and to the public he served.   For his dedication to the Federation, David has been given a promotion to the rank of Lt. Commander and our love.

Three Years with David Perez, 2001-2003

Ulysses Anniversary Party, July 2001, at Pam's house.  David shoots the breeze with the rest of the crew. (Pamela Gengo's picture) Jurassic Trek, August 2001.  David sits with the rest of the Ulysses crew at Denney's before heading off to Universal Studios. (Pamela Gengo's picture)
Top, Christmas Party at David's house.  Jesse reads "The Night Before Christmas" and we all frantically exchange gifts every time an 'and' is read.  David has fun wearing a Rudolf-the-Red-Nose-Reindeer nose. (Pamela Gengo's picture)

Left, outside of Denny's, David slows down for a group shot before we hop in the cars for Universal Studios.
Top, the Living Desert, January 2002.  David squeezes in at the back for the group photo.

Right, David waves hello as I take pictures of a convention meeting in Pasadena.
On the charter bus to Las Vegas, March 2002, David turns around to talk to me. In Las Vegas, we all have a go at a warp core breach at The Star Trek: Experience.
Jurassic Trek II: The Lost Trekkers, August 24, 2002, David and Michael Rose gamely smile at the roaming photographer. At Universal Studios, David is just left of center in the big group picture by the Universal Globe.
In the center, David and the group before invading Jurassic Park: The Ride! Before the drop, David is quite dry, but the whole point of the ride is to get WET.
Top, at Juanita's graduation from the University of Phoenix, November 16, 2002, David, Nathan, and Gene give me a grin.

Left, David looks particularly good in his yellow polo shirt.
After the graduation ceremony, David is just behind Gene during the group photo session outside. At Black Angus for the graduation dinner, David digs in with the rest of us.
Top, David is very spiffy in his new Star Trek uniform for the Star Trek: Nemesis Premiere at the Redlands Krikorian, December 13, 2002.

Right, David takes center stage for the group shot at The Living Desert, January 11, 2003.
Top, David rests while we wait for our new member, Leon Barnett, to show up.

Left, David proudly displays the Ulysses logo for a group butt shot.
David walks with Juanita as we head straight for the new Veterinarian hospital on the grounds. I make David pose for this shot in the veterinarian hospital's Discovery room for kids.
Top, to the far left, David listens in on Damien's instructions for "Never give up.  Never surrender" at Mouse Trek, May 10, 2003.  (Disneyland, CA)

Right, at the Living Desert, January 11, 2003, David and the rest of us trudge to the African Village to check out, Sabi, the cheetah!
On the left, David and his sister next to him, at Mouse Trek, May 10, 2003. At the back of the table, David sits down with us at the Rainforest Cafe to round off our hard day of play at Disneyland!
At the Jet Propulsion Lab Open House, May 17, 2003, David has just finished checking out the satellite control room. Walking through the Mars museum, David becomes one of "The Few and The Proud."
David and Juanita stroll through the machine room, looking at all the interesting little bits. David takes a breather with the rest of us at the end of our day at JPL, in the hot, baking sun.
Top, David and the rest of us before taking off for Universal Studios for Jurassic Trek: The Search for T-Rex, August 30, 2003.  (Denny's parking lot)

Left, I take one of David as we hang around waiting for 'D' to get ready. :-)
At Universal Studios, after just missing the Nemesis Station and Angeles crew, David, in the center, poses with the rest of us for the obligatory group shot. Before heading back onto Jurassic Park: The Ride, David waits patiently for the group shot.
In the center, David does a Nixon impression while the rest of us scream our heads off. Sitting down in the shade for the Waterworld show, David looks towards the stuntmen who have been spraying the crowd with water.
David, to the far right, poses with the rest of us with the Waterworld stuntmen after the show.  The guy in the tattered blue/gray shirt was an extra on an episode of "Enterprise" to our surprise.

These photos don't begin to encapsulate the three years that David had been with us, but I hope they show how much he was involved with our ship and we with him.

Thank you for visiting.

Pictures, accept where noted, were taken by Mandy Ison, and provided by her, Nathan Gastineau, and Juanita Gamble.
