October 25, Saturday night, we return from L.A. to see the fires burning through the north San Bernardino hills. On the I-10 freeway, the fires are especially vivid at night as they burn towards Highland.
More of the line of fire Saturday night, which burned through and destroyed many houses in North San Bernardino. The next day, Sunday, October 26, the fires have reached the hills behind Nathan's neighborhood. This is the view up Church St.
People park on Church St., like we have, to watch the fires engulf the mountainside. Fingers of flames creep along.
A Sky Crane races overhead from the local reservoir. The authorities blockade the top of Church St..
Another, red Sky Crane flies overhead. The fires are coming down the hill at an alarming rate. But the helicopters are fighting them.
Nathan talks on his walkie talkie with deputies on duty to find out the latest news. The fire has almost completely engulfed the top of the hill. The smoke moves in and is about to make everything dark as it covers Highland. One of the 6 helicopters working the fire looks very small.
But the red of the flames can still be seen under all the smoke. The hillside simply goes up like a dry campfire. The flames are huge!
Another close up of the hill, as the fire rapidly consumes the dry underbrush. More huge, frightening flames. Those of us watching were mesmerized.
The flames crest the next hill and move to engulf the adjoining slope. The winds are trying to beat them back, but it's not working. The fires move on to the next slope despite the winds.
Pull back shot, the mountainside looks like a volcano has erupted. Notice the change from bright sunlight to brown, overcast light. It's the smoke cloud about to envelope Highland. Towards Sunday evening, the fires are now directly up the street from Nathan's house. But the fire is being beat back by the helicopters.
A smaller helicopter passes by over the house. They seem to have got the fire under control, but only until sundown, when the helicopters have to be called off. Monday night, after racing back from Irvine to help evacuate, the fires are as big as ever! Nathan's neighborhood is blockaded, but I get through anyway.
The fires have now descended towards the houses in a long line. In the picture is the top of a garage of a house at the end of Nathan's street. That night, LoRee and Jim, Nathan's mom and dad, watch from the lower right corner up the street as the fires get too close!
The glowing line is a vivid backdrop in the night. Close up of the flames. At this point, we are under voluntary evacuation and I have packed my car with items of Nathan's. His parents have packed their car as well.
The next morning, ash has coated everything. This is a close up of the ash on my car.

Thankfully, we weren't ordered to leave, but smoke is everywhere and now we're down wind of it. It was hard to get any sleep as the smell of smoke was overwhelming all through the night.

We unpack the cars and I leave for Irvine, and back to school again.
