Halloween for Evacuees, Norton Air Force Base Hanger, San Bernardino, CA, October 31, 2003

The old Norton Air Force Base Hanger which was converted into an evacuation center during the fires. Juanita and 'D' are ready to go as Federation officers. Behind them are the hundreds of Halloween costumes that were donated.
Lisa is ready to go as a Klingon. Bonnie is ready in her Nathan Hale t-shirt.
The left side of the hanger. The second story portion is where they set up the Halloween maze for the kids and which was televised. The floor of the hanger below, where hundreds of evacuees stayed for weeks, some of them not knowing whether or not their homes still stood.
Me, in no costume unfortunately. I left immediately after class in Irvine to make it here in time. Part of the group, waiting for the show to get on the road.
Roy shows up as the Klingon Chancellor. Those new contacts of his are spooky! One of the on-site volunteers, she's a Lifesaver. ;-)
And the feeding frenzy begins! The guy in the white shirt handing out candy was also evacuated and volunteered to hand out candy with the rest of us. Bonnie pitches in from her trick-or-treating station on the floor.
Dana hands some candy to a little ninja. Trish hands out candy to Rolly-Polly-Olly.
Lisa hands out candy to a little boy dressed as an infant. 'D' and the Lifesaver greet a new tricker-or-treater as well.
Carolyn, the Klingon, and the Clown, hang out together. The clown is a lady who was also staying here as an evacuee.
Roy dares anybody to take some candy! Juanita gets in on the fun too.
Juanita decides to take a seat while handing out all the free candy. And there was a lot of it! I ask some kids if they want one or two pounds.
They say yes, two pounds please. I crack up as Juanita takes a close up. Chris, who was evacuated from one of the mountain cities, knows his home is still standing, but can't return because of the electrical wires which lay in the streets. Here he is handing out candy too.
Juanita and Chris hang out during a lull in the feeding frenzy. On the way out, Bonnie gives one of the firemen a hug. Two of them were stationed at the entrance to the hanger handing out candy on their knees to the kids. They had just got off work from fighting the fires, but instead of going home, had gone to the local store to buy candy and be there for Halloween.
