Ulysses Mission Log I was begun by our illustrious captain soon after we were commissioned in June 2000. There are plenty of thrills and spills and conduct unbecoming an officer (or rather officers). You'll have to read on to find out!

Again, for your conveniance, Ulysses Mission Log I has been broken up into three-chapter sections per page. Just click on the links below to jump to the chapter you want to read.

Chapter 1

A dark, green planet revolves around a sun-like body. Around the planet, two moons orbit, oblivious to the lives and civilizations they could destroy by changing their routines. The inhabitants of the planet are as varied as those on Earth. Most of them are peaceful and have overcome their petty differences, allowing them to concentrate on bettering themselves. Their civilizations can be compared to a utopia.

Several light years away, the USS Ulysses is studying the path of a newly discovered comet. Commander Gengo is sitting in the center seat monitoring the activity of the crew. Lieutenant Commander Ison is performing scans with her console, while Lieutenant Blair analyzes the results.

The Captain, in her ready room, orders a cup of tea from the replicator. “Earl Grey, hot.”As it materializes on the platform, the smell starts to make her mouth water. She picks it up and breathes in the deep, dark aroma. The fragrance of the Bergamot gives her a slight headache that quickly passes. She walks back to her desk and sits down. She takes a small sip of her tea as she activates her computer screen.

She has been reading one of the works by the twentieth-century author, Stephen King. The story revolves around a town called Jerusalem’s Lot and the pesky vampires that plague it. As two of the characters are climbing the stairs to a bedroom, the chime on her door sounds. She releases an exasperated sigh and says, “Come.”

Commander Gengo walks in and apologizes, "Captain, I am sorry to interrupt you.”

“Yes, Commander, what can I do for you?” the Captain asks rather pointedly.

The Commander stands at attention and gives her report. “We have concluded our scan of the comet and its course, and I am afraid that we have a problem.”

“What kind of problem?” the Captain asks.

“The path of the comet will bring it into contact with one of the moons of the nearby planet. The trajectory will cause the moon to shift into orbit of the other and we are looking at the total devastation of the planet if we are unable to change the course of the comet.” the Commander replies.

Chapter 2

The Captain sets her cup down and leans back in her chair, "Is there any chance that the comet will change course before reaching the planet?"

Commander Gengo responds, "No sir, we have triple-checked the numbers and trajectory. Unless something is done to forcibly change it’s course, it will impact the moon."

Captain Gamble stands and walks to her window. She stares at the stars as if searching for a solution in their luminescence. Suddenly, she turns, "Pam, I want Chief Engineer Perez in the main briefing room in ten minutes with a plan to divert the comet’s path. Tell him to use whatever resources required, but I expect a solution that works. Dismissed."

After the Commander leaves her ready room the Captain sits at her desk and activates a comm channel to Starfleet.

A face appears on the screen and says, "Starfleet Command, how may I help you?"

She straightens her shirt and responds, "I need to speak to the President, please."

"May I ask who is calling?" the face says.

"Tell him that Captain Gamble needs to speak to him about a dire situation we have stumbled across," the Captain says.

The screen goes black for a few minutes and then the face of President Haslage appears. "Captain Gamble, I’m pleased to hear from you. What can I do for you?" the President asks.

She unconsciously sits straighter, "Mr. President, we seem to have a rather large problem here. A newly discovered comet is going to impact with the nearby moon of a planet and wipe out its entire population."

The President’s composure never falters, but he takes a deep breath. "Captain, are you sure of your calculations? We don’t want to cause panic unnecessarily. Is there any possibility that the comet will pass at a safe distance?" he asks.

The Captain shakes her head and says, "No, sir, there is no chance that it will not impact. I have my Chief Engineer working on a way to divert it, but we’re not sure if it will be possible."

"Very well, Captain, keep us informed of your progress," he replies. The screen goes blank and the IFT logo appears.

The captain gets up and places her cup on the replicator and watches it disappear. As she exits her ready room, she says, "Lieutenant Blair, you have the conn. Commanders Gengo and Ison, if you would accompany me, please." They follow her into the turbolift and watch the door close.

"How did Starfleet receive the news?" Lieutenant Commander Ison asks. The Captain turns to her and says, "President Haslage reacted the same way as always, with complete calm."

Chapter 3

The lift comes to a stop and the three walk out. As they enter the sensor field, the door opens to the briefing room and they find Lieutenant Perez waiting. The captain motions everyone to a seat, "Please have a seat. I know that everyone is aware of the situation so we won't waste precious time talking about it. Lieutenant Perez, what have you come up with to divert the comet's path?"

Lieutenant Perez stands and activates the screen on the wall in front of the captain. "We’ve plotted the comet's course, and there is only one place in the path that we have any chance of diverting it. As the comet arcs closer to the planet, the gravity of the twin moons will pull it towards impact. We can use the tractor beam by reversing the polarity and convert it into a repulsor beam, therefore pushing the comet aside. This should allow it to pass the moon without impacting," he says. He sits down and waits for the captain's reaction.

She looks at the screen for another minute and then says, "That's very good Lieutenant, but I have a few reservations. The first is, does the Ulysses actually have enough power to do this?"

Lieutenant Perez runs his hand through his hair and answers, "No, we don't have the required power. We need to have at least one other vessel with the equivalent power of ours."

"That's one detail you left out in your report, Lieutenant," she says. The lieutenant smiles weakly in obvious embarrassment. "No matter, we'll find another ship. I believe the Nathan Hale is in this quadrant. However, my second concern is the effect on the planet. Even with both ships, I don't think we're going to be able to push the comet far enough to avoid all effects on the planet," the captain says.

Lieutenant Perez shakes his head, "You're right, we are only going to be able to keep it from impacting with the planet. The near miss is still going to shift the orbit of at least one moon if not both. This is going to cause tidal changes and possible earthquakes. I'm afraid there is still going to be major problems and possible catastrophic changes on the planet."

The captain stands and walks over to the window and turns, "Very well, begin your preparations Lieutenant Perez. Commander Gengo, I need you to work with sickbay to coordinate the rescue and relief efforts that are going to be needed. Pam, I'm going to need you to be down there as soon as possible to make sure that we save as many people as we can. I won't put any of the crew at risk so nobody is going to leave the ship until I'm sure the worst is over." Commander Gengo nods and begins thinking about all that will be needed.

The captain then looks to her Ops officer, "Commander Ison, I need to speak with Captain Gastineau to coordinate our task and to get them here as soon as possible. Everyone knows his or her duties. Let's get it done. The people on the planet are counting on us to save them without their knowing it." They exit the room leaving the captain to stare out the window and wonder if they can really move a comet.
