The captain and second officer of the Ulysses materialize on the transporter of the Nathan Hale and are shocked by the quiet that greets them. They immediately pull their phasers off of their belts and step off the pad. As they enter the hallway they begin to feel a strange feeling of not being alone but a quick check of the tricorder that Commander Ison brought with her confirms that there is no known life form aboard the ship.

The captain begins to say, "Commander, when was the last diagnostic check done on the tricorder, I definitely feel-" she spins around, sensing that something is touching her but sees nothing.

Commander Ison looks around also and thinks that she sees a movement but nothing shows on the tricorder. "Captain, I don't think that we are alone. There is definitely a presence here but nothing corporeal that the tricorder can pick up.”

“Let's get to the bridge and see if there is a sensor log of what happened to the crew," the captain says as they begin to walk to the nearest turbolift.

They enter the turbolift and state that they want to go to the bridge. The lift begins moving and after a short time it stops abruptly, throwing them both onto the floor. As they pick themselves up off the floor, the lights in the lift go off and they find themselves in pitch black. "Well, that didn't get us too far. Do you get the feeling that we aren't supposed to reach the bridge?" Commander Ison asks.

"It does appear that way, doesn't it? Well, up we go. Let's try to reach the bridge by way of a good, refreshing climb up that long, narrow ladder," the captain says sarcastically as they begin climbing up the side of the lift to the access door.

As they pull themselves onto the top of the lift the captain's communicator beeps. "This is the captain, Commander Gengo, we haven't found anything except that something on the ship doesn't want us to reach the bridge," the captain responds automatically.

An obviously exasperated commander responds, "Captain, I told you that it was too dangerous for you to be there. What do you mean something on the ship?"

"There is a presence that we can't identify on the tricorder, but it is definitely here. It apparently is trying to stop us from reaching the bridge. It has gone as far as stopping the lift between levels," Commander Ison answers. "We are standing on a precariously unstable turbolift and we need to concentrate on what we are doing. We will contact you when, or if, we make it alive to the bridge. Ison out."

On the bridge of the Ulysses, Commander Gengo stares angrily at the ceiling as she realizes that they have terminated the communication.

Back on the planet

"Captain, you're hurt, we should check it out," Lt. Lucas observes.

"It's nothing Bonnie, I'll be fine. We need to try to figure out what happened and how to get out of here first," the captain says. He tries to stand up and finds that he is very light-headed and instead of letting the crew see him unsteady he acts like he was just stretching and says, "Howard, try to see if there is some way to get that door open from this side. Maybe there is a hinge or something old fashioned like that."

As Howard goes over to the door, Bonnie works her way over to the captain as if she is going to talk to him and sees that his injury is quite serious and tries to think how she is going to get him to let her help him. "Sir, maybe you should rest, you seem to be losing quite a lot of blood," Bonnie says as she leans towards him. He tries to move away and starts to wobble a little and then loses consciousness. Bonnie takes the opportunity to start cleaning the wound and working on stopping the bleeding.

In the turbolift shaft

Commander Ison, who is in the lead, begins to work her way up the lift ladder and suddenly she feels a movement. The captain also feels it and looks down to see the lift moving towards them and says, "Mandy, I think now would be a good time to work up a little sweat."

"Why?" Mandy asks, panting.

"Because the lift is chasing us," the captain almost shouts as she pushes her second officer up the stairs.

On the planet

Lt. Lucas finds that the wound on her captain is indeed quite serious and she wishes that she had paid more attention in her medical classes in the academy. She tears a piece off of her uniform with Howard's help and they create a makeshift bandage that helps stem the flow of their captain's blood. She puts pressure on the wound to attempt to staunch the flow of life giving blood and the captain tries to move away from the pain. She looks to see if he is conscious and finds that he is not but his body is reacting from the pain she is creating.

Howard returns to trying to figure out the door and finds that there is indeed a hinge on the door and he starts working at getting it out. He yells over to Lt. Brenner that he should start working on the one on his door and is rewarded with a reprimand from Lt. Lucas. "Howard, the captain is not well, I don't want him awake so stop yelling," she says angrily.

Howard answers, "Sorry, I was just trying to get us out so that we can get him some help before he bleeds to death."

On the Nathan Hale

"Faster Mandy, it is gaining on us. What level are we at," the captain asks between gasps for breath.

"I think that we are…wait this door is ajar let's go through here and let it go by," Mandy says quickly. They climb out of the shaft just as the lift reaches the door and stops. "Now what the heck is it up to? I don't care if it sits there forever and rots in its spot, I am not getting back into it. I would rather climb up a Jeffries tube with a Klingon than get back on that lift," Mandy says sarcastically.

The captain looks around and says, "Well, we’re on the bridge but we are the only ones on the bridge."

Mandy looks around and sees that things look normal but observes, "It appears that everything is normal but I just get the feeling that it isn't and that we are going to regret coming here."

"Yes, well, I'll check the captain's ready room, you see if you can access the logs to see what happened," the captain says as she starts walking towards the door. She turns back to say something else to her second officer and yells, "Mandy, look out!"
