On Risa

They reach the surface and Captain Gastineau reaches for his comm badge and realizes his entire crew is on the surface. Commander Ison smiles and taps her badge, “Ison to Ulysses.”

The captain’s voice comes across, “Ulysses here, nice to hear from you again. What is your situation and where is Commander Gengo?”

She turns and sees the XO approaching and says, “She’s just arriving, stand-by.”

“Gengo here, Captain, we are all accounted for but there is one casualty,” Commander Gengo states.

“Are you going to explain commander or do I get to guess,” the captain says shortly.

Both commanders look at each other and Captain Gastineau, seeing their discomfort replies, “Captain, Lt. Brenner sacrificed himself to save us.”

“Very well, we will transport you and your crew to your ship and we will talk after you have gotten yourself situated back on your ship. Ulysses out,” she says.

Commander Tajalle begins getting the crew into units to beam up, she coordinates with the transporter officer of the Ulysses, and the crew begins dematerializing.

On the Ulysses bridge

“Lt., you have the bridge,” she says and walks to her ready room. She walks into her ready room and sits heavily on her couch. She cups her head in her hands and sits wondering how this will affect the crew of the Nathan Hale and her captain. She thinks about the tone in Captain Gastineau’s voice and the control he must have been using to continue giving orders and getting his crew back to his ship.

She raises her head at the chime of her door, “Come.”

Commanders Gengo and Ison walk in and quickly notice the body language of their captain. “Captain, we have the report of what happened on the planet,” Commander Gengo begins.

“That’s good Commander,” the captain says, “If the two of you could log in your reports separately and I will go over them both later. Thank you, dismissed.” She stands up, goes over to her replicator, gets her tea, and sits behind her desk. The two commanders turn and leave without a word, they realize that the captain is trying to remain under control for the sake of her crew and they respect her privacy.

When they leave, she returns to her thoughts of what needs to be done. The first priority will be to rid the planet of the Nagilum and then deal with the loss of the Hale crewmember. The latter, being the hardest part.

She is broken from her train of thought by the chime of her door again. "Come," she says and watches a visibly defeated Captain Gastineau walk in. "Sit down Nathan," she says and walks over to the replicator. She orders two Earl Grey teas and when they appear she walks over and hands one to him and returns to her desk.

"So what do we do about the Nagilum," he asks sharply.

"Well, what would you like me to do about it," she answers just as sharply. "They are below the surface, our scans won't penetrate it and I have no way to beam them out. So, any suggestions?" she asks.

He glares at her for a moment and says, "We need to get our engineers together and find a way to penetrate the surface."

"Really, well, I know what we should do," Captain Gamble says, "We should have some Aldebaran Whiskey."

He looks at her quickly and begins to smile weakly, "No thanks, been there, done that, with you I believe." He sips his tea and says, "Thanks. I appreciate the thought, and what you're trying to do."

"Ok Nathan, I agree, we need to get these beings out and away from Risa, without destroying the planet," she says. "My only problem is, how do we do that," she asks him pointedly.

He stands, sets his cup back into the replicator and says, "I'll get my people working on it. I just hope that the Nagilum give us the time that we need to remove them from the planet. I doubt that the killing of Lt. Brenner will keep them occupied much longer."

"Agreed, so let's get to work and deal with our sorrow after we solve the problem," she says as she watches him leave her ready room.

On the Hale

Captain Gastineau, steps off the transporter pad, and taps his badge. "Commander Tajalle, assemble an engineering team and report to me in briefing room two," he says and walks into the hallway. As he begins moving towards the briefing room, he thinks of any way his crew can find a way through the force field.

The massive ship lurches savagely and he slams into the bulkhead injuring his shoulder in the process. In extreme pain, he gets up and taps his badge, "Bridge, what the hell is going on up there?"

Commander Tajalle's voice comes across, "We have been grabbed by a tractor beam. We have hull damage on decks 5 and 6; the forcefields are securing the hull breach on deck 6."

On the Ulysses

They watch through the viewscreen as an energy field envelops the Hale. Before they can call the captain to the bridge, the ship slams sidewise. The captain walks out and demands, "What's happening?"

Commander Gengo steps forward and says, "The Nathan Hale has been caught in a beam of some type and now another has captured us."

"Get me the Hale," the captain snaps as she moves to the center seat.

Commander Ison quickly contacts the other ship, "Captain, I have the captain of the Nathan Hale."

"Captain Gastineau, what is your status over there?" she asks.

"We are being held stationary by the beam as we can see is your predicament also. We have tried to break loose with no effect," he states.

"What about injuries, did anyone get hurt," she asks knowingly, watching him cradle his arm.

"My crew has a few bumps and bruises and I hurt my shoulder," he says distractedly.

"Captain Gastineau, you're hedging, are you injured worse than you are letting on," she asks.

"I don't know, I haven't had the doctor look at it yet. We need to get out of these beams," he says obviously annoyed.

Both ships suddenly begin shaking violently, knocking everyone off their feet. After a seemingly endless time, the shaking stops and everyone begins to pick themselves up when the viewscreen of both ships shows the Nagilum. “We are pleased with the results that we have received and we thank you for your help. We are leaving the planet and will leave the body of your crewman there,” the entity says. The screens go blank and everyone stares at it in disbelief.

Captain Gastineau turns to his first officer and says, “D, locate Jim’s body and bring him back here.”

“Yes sir, I’ll take care of it personally,” she says and leaves the bridge with a security detail.

The captain walks to his chair and sits down, “Get me the Ulysses.”

After a moment, Lt. Lucas says, “On screen sir.”

He stands and speaks to the image of Captain Gamble, “Captain, did you receive that message from the Nagilum?”

“Yes, we got the message also, have you been able to locate Lt. Brenner’s body yet?” the captain of the Ulysses asks.

“D is on the surface now, she will locate him and bring him home. I would like you to attend the memorial aboard the Nathan Hale when we get all the arrangements made,” he says.

“It seems that our sensors are now working again, now that we don’t need them,” Captain Gamble observes.

The next day aboard the Nathan Hale

The crew of the Nathan Hale gathers in the main torpedo bay and awaits their captain and the command staff of the Ulysses. D was successful in locating Lt. Brenner’s body and the crew is now gathered to pay their last respects to his memory.

Hale Transporter Room

Captain Gastineau watches as the Ulysses bridge crew coalesces on the transporter pads. He steps forward and extends his hand to Captain Gamble. “Captain Gamble, thank you for coming, I’m sure Jim is watching,” he says.

As she steps off the pad, she takes his hand and replies, “Thank you for allowing us to give our respects.”

They leave the room and walk in silence to the torpedo bay. As they walk in everyone comes to attention, “At ease,” Captain Gastineau says. The two captains walk to the front of the room and the rest of the Ulysses crew takes positions around the room. Silent greetings go around and then everyone looks to the two somber captains.

Captain Gastineau begins, “I want to thank everyone for attending this solemn event. We all knew and loved Jim Brenner and his loss is a heavy burden that we have to bear. His presence would brighten a room and he was always ready to help anyone in need. He looks around at the faces in the room and continues, “By the faces that I see here I can tell that everyone is as deeply affected by his loss as I am, but we need to remember his life also. He gave his life to save his ship and his friends and we must never forget his heroic spirit.”

He stops and looks at D, “Now if anyone would like to share an experience or a memory with us please come forward.” For the next hour and a half, people file up and share a treasured moment or story from their experiences with Jim, keeping all eyes moist and red.

Captain Gamble steps forward after the last person moves back to their spot, “The crew of the Nathan Hale knew Jim much better than me and my crew, but we became quite attached to him. We feel for your loss and share in the pain, but we must always remember that he died to save us. However, even though the price was high, he also taught a species the meaning of courage and sacrifice. The Nagilum left Risa because of Jim’s lessons on life and death and I think that we must always remember this.”

She steps back and Nathan says, “Atten-hut, Honor Guard.”

The honor guard moves forward, and removes the flag from the tube and hand it to his captain so that it can be returned to the lieutenant’s family.

All salute as the tube leaves the ship and D says, “Salute.” The entire room salutes as the tube slides out into space.

Captain Gastineau says, “Dismissed.” Captain Gamble and Captain Gastineau stay behind and watch everyone leave.

“That was very nice Nathan, I am sure that Jim appreciated it,” Captain Gamble says.

“Why don’t we go to my ready room Captain,” he says and they walk out into the hall.
