This is a play written by Juanita Gamble in 2002, involving the Ulysses, Nathan Hale, and Klingon friends. At the time, we were planning on filming this play for our Star Trek Episode. However, we never could get everyone together for it, so here it is, for you to read and enjoy on its own!

Voice over starfield. Ulysses in background.

Gamble: Captain’s log stardate 7245.8. After the successful conclusion of our mission to assist the Nathan Hale we are awaiting the rest of our crew to return from a much deserved shore leave.

The Bridge of the Ulysses

Gamble: (Sitting in command chair) Commander Gengo, has everyone returned from the surface yet?
Gengo: (in chair to the left) No sir, Comm. Ison is still on the planet.
Gamble: I see. I assume she’s not alone.
Gengo: I wouldn’t know sir. (smiling)
Gamble: Ulysses to Comm. Ison (looking towards the ceiling)

On Risa

Ison: (taps badge) Ison here.

On the Bridge

Gamble: Commander, is there a problem? We are awaiting your return.

On Risa

Ison: No sir, no problem. I’ll be ready in a moment, standby. Ison out. (Turns to her companion. Shot only shows Mandy) Well, duty calls. I had a very good time.

Camera now pulls back to show who the companion is.

Nathan: So did I. Maybe we can do this again sometime.

He leans towards her and just before his lips touch hers, his communicator beeps. The voice of his first officer is heard; Nathan and Mandy pull apart with a shared look of exasperation.

Nathan: (taps badge) Yes, D?
D: Captain we are awaiting your return so that we can leave orbit. Are you ready to come aboard, sir?
Nathan: Yes commander, standby please.
D: We’re standing by. Hale out.
Nathan: Well, we’d better get going, see you around the galaxy. (taps badge) Captain to the Hale, one to beam aboard.
D: On your order sir.
Nathan: Energize.

Mandy watches Nathan dematerialize and then taps her badge

Ison: Ison to Ulysses I’m ready to beam aboard.
Hester: (Through the communicator) We’re awaiting your orders.
Ison: Beam me up.

The Ulysses and Nathan Hale are leaving orbit when a distress signal comes in from a Klingon shuttle. It is an automated message.

Klingon shuttle: (system wide distress call) This is the Shuttle Kronos, we are experiencing engine difficulties and request assistance.

On the bridge of the Nathan Hale

Lucas: Captain, we have a message coming in from the Ulysses.
Nathan: Put it on the main viewer Lt.

Captain Gamble’s image appears on the main viewscreen in front of him

Gamble: Captain Gastineau, did you receive the distress signal from the Klingon shuttle?
Nathan: Yes we did. What do you think about it? Are you going to respond?
Gamble: Yes, but I’m a little suspicious, what is a Klingon shuttle doing out here alone? Maybe we should both go.
Nathan: You’re probably right. We can vouch for each other if something happens. I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen all the brigs and trials that I could ever want to see.
Gamble: Good, then it’s decided. We both go.

The viewscreen goes back to the starfield. Two hours pass.

On the bridge of the Ulysses

Ison: (on the right) Captain, the Nathan Hale is attempting to contact the vessel.
Gamble: (from her seat) Lt Hester, are you picking up any life signs?
Hester: I’m afraid that they’re using some kind of scanner buffer to block our sensors, I’m not getting any readings at all. Hold on a minute, (He touches the screen in front of him and stares at the readings in disbelief) I’m reading a power build-up directly below us and…

(He stops in mid-sentence and a large flash is seen and everyone shields their eyes)

Gamble: What was that?
Hester: (he reads the board) Unkown. There’s a message coming from the Hale.
Gamble: On screen

The viewscreen shows Nathan

Nathan: Captain, did you see that beam come from below your vessel?
Gamble: No. (she says in mock disbelief) Did something happen?
Ison: (Responds with a smile) Captain Gastineau, we read a buildup below us right before the shuttle was destroyed.

A voice interrupts over the intercom on both ships.

A Klingon Captain: Federation vessels, stand down and prepare to be boarded. The captain of each vessel will surrender themselves to stand trial for crimes against the Klingon Empire.

Both captains respond simultaneously in disbelief

Nathan & Gamble: Oh, not again.

Ulysses bridge

Gamble: (Gamble stands up and walks towards the viewscreen and says) Lieutenant Hester, open a channel to that ship. (facing the viewscreen squarely) Klingon Captain, this is Juanita Gamble, Captain of the USS Ulysses. We did not destroy your vessel. We will not surrender ourselves to you. However, if you would like to meet to discuss the situation then we will be open to suggestions.

The response comes across as only audio, the Klingons refuse to activate their viewscreen

K.Capt: Captain Gamble, we witnessed the beam coming from your vessel, yet you say it didn’t come from you. We find that highly unlikely.

Aboard the Nathan Hale, they are listening to the exchange and Nathan tries to diffuse the delicate situation

Nathan: (getting up from his seat) Lt. Lucas, open a channel to the Klingons and the Ulysses.
Lucas: Channel open, sir.
Nathan: (He stands between the two helm positions) Klingon captain, Captain Gamble and I are willing to beam ourselves to your ship to try to sort this misunderstanding out but we will not surrender.

Aboard the Ulysses, Juanita reacts to his volunteering her to go to the Klingons.

Gamble: (She stares at the image of Nathan in disbelief) We are?
K.Capt.: (voice only) The two of you must transport over without weapons and alone.
Gamble: (sarcastically) If we come alone then one of us won’t be there.
Nathan: At ease, Captain. (Says with a smile) Klingon Captain, we’ll beam over to your ship in 5 mins. Hale out.

The viewscreen returns to the starfield and the Klingon vessel. Back aboard the bridge of the Ulysses

Hester: Captain, the Nathan Hale is requesting that you transport over to their ship.
Gamble: Yeah, I’m sure that they are. Mandy, you have the bridge. Lt. inform the Hale that I am on my way. (Walks towards turbolift at back of bridge and enters. As doors close she speaks) Computer, transporter room two. (speaks to ceiling) Captain to Lt. Perez.
Perez: (through the speaker) Perez here.
Gamble: Lieutenant, are you able to scan the Klingon vessel? I want to make sure that we can leave if we need to.
Perez: (through the speaker) Not a problem, Captain. Just give the word and you’ll be back here before they know that you’re gone.
Gamble: That’s good to know, David, thank you.

She exits the lift and then walks into transporter room two

Averette: (from behind the console) Captain, I have the coordinates for the Hale.
Gamble: (steps onto the transporter pad) Very good, energize.

Nathan Hale transporter room - Juanita materializes aboard the Nathan Hale

Gamble: (from the pad) Hello captain, it’s been such a long time since I last saw you.
Nathan: (moving towards the transporter pad) We need to take this serious, those Klingons aren’t kidding.
Gamble: Really, well you’re not the one that they’re ready to execute. So don’t start telling me about—
Nathan: (he interrupts her, stopping before the transporter pad) I know you didn’t do it and I’m not going to let them pin it on you. We’re going to figure this out and we’re all going to become friends.

She looks at him in disbelief and then a look of concern comes across her face.

Gamble: Nathan, I want you to know that I’m just a little worried.
Nathan: We’re going to get through this and we’re going to be fine. Let’s go. (He steps onto the transporter pad next to her)
Howard: (from behind the transporter console) I have the coordinates locked in, sir.
Nathan: Very well, open a channel. Klingon vessel, we are ready to beam ourselves over.
Klingon: (through speaker, happily) We are awaiting your arrival, Federation Captains.

Aboard the Feklehr’s Pride. They materialize onto the Klingon transporter pad. Two Klingons face them with weapons drawn.

Nathan: (angrily) We agreed to come here to discuss this unfortunate situation. We came unarmed and in good faith. What’s with the weapons?

The large Klingon on the right answers

Tom: We made no such agreement. You are both under arrest in the name of the Klingon Empire.

The other Klingon steps onto the transporter and touches the captains’ communicators

K2: (as he touches the communicators) Your communicators have been disabled so there will be no contact with your ships.
Gamble: (demanding) This is outrageous. Who is the captain? We demand to speak to him.
Tom: (menacing) You’re not talking to anyone. Move!

He yanks Nathan off of the pad and pushes him towards the door

Nathan: (demanding) Where are you taking us?

In the corridor

K2: (shoving Nathan) Shut up and move, you’re going to the brig until we reach Kronos.

The captains are deposited into separate cells. After the Klingons leave

Gamble: (walking around her cell) Well, here we are again. I think I prefer the brigs on Earth. (going over to the bed) At least the bed had a piece of fabric on it. This is just a part of the bulkhead.
Nathan: (trying to be cheerful, standing by the forcefield) It does seem that we’re getting the tours of brigs lately. But, I agree, Earth’s brigs are much more comfortable. So any suggestions. (wanders around the cell)
Gamble: (standing) Just one, find a way out of here. I don’t relish a trip to Kronos.

Nathan checks the walls

Nathan: Then what? We can’t contact the ships and I believe that we’ve gone to warp.
Gamble: (after a minute of pacing) I know, maybe we can steal a shuttle. Do you think they have a spare we can borrow?
Nathan: (anxiously) We need to do something soon. Start working on trying to figure out this forcefield.

On the Ulysses, the crew watches as the Klingon vessel cloaks.

Ison: (stands in disbelief) Lt. Blair, can you track that vessel?
Blair: (at tactical) No sir, the sensors have lost track of them.
Ison: Lt. Hester, contact the Hale.

Channel opens and D appears on viewscreen

D: (sitting) Commander Ison, do you still have a lock on the captains?
Ison: No, we lost contact as soon as they beamed aboard the ship. We’re trying to scan to see if they are still in the area or if they’ve gone to warp.
D: (standing, going over to navigation) We’ve scanned the area and we’re picking up an ion trail; we’re trying to triangulate the coordinates of their course. (she pauses) Comm. Ison we’ve got a course figured out. They’re heading for Kronos and I’m setting a course to intercept them now. We are sending you the coordinates and I suggest that we approach from different directions.
Ison: (to the viewscreen) Ok, we’ll stay in contact. Ulysses out. (screen goes back to starfield) Helm, set a course for the Klingon vessel, warp 9.
Hester: (at helm) Course laid in, ma’am. Awaiting your orders.
Ison: Engage. (sits in center seat)

Aboard the Nathan Hale, bridge scene with D in center seat

D: Helm, set course to intercept and engage, warp 6. Lieutenant, is their any trace of the Klingon vessel yet?
Tact: No sir, we’re still trying to narrow down the sensor sweep to pinpoint the exact path.
Helm: Commander, I have a fix on their trail, they are definitely headed for Kronos.
D: Very good Lieutenant, inform the Ulysses. Increase to warp 9, let’s overtake them before they reach Kronos.
