Chapter 1

The USS Ulysses, battered by the recent encounter with the Klingons, slowly heads back towards Earth. Her crew, slightly worse for wear, looks forward to a well-deserved rest.

As the captain sits in her ready room, a call comes in from the president. “President Haslage, nice to hear from you, what can I do for you,” the captain says.

“Captain Gamble, I have some news for you and I couldn’t wait until you return to Earth. The IFT Council has been looking for a new Director of Communications and your name came up. I need to know if you would be interested in taking the position,” he asks.

“Mr. President, I am honored and would be happy to take on this position, but I have one question? If I agree to this, do I have to give up my ship, because that is not something I am ready to do,” she tells him.

“I would never ask you to make that kind of sacrifice; I know how much your command means to you. There is one benefit that I have forgotten to mention, the rank. If you take this position you will receive a promotion to the rank of Commodore,” he says.

“All right, then if those are the conditions then I accept. But may I make a request,” she asks?

He looks at her suspiciously and says, “Ok, let me hear your request, although I am sure that I will not like it.”

“I want to promote my XO to Captain and have it happen at the same time as my promotion,” she tells him authoritatively.

He sits back in his chair and looks at her through the screen for a couple of minutes, not saying a thing and then he says, “All right, you gave me a very impelling argument and I believe that we can do that. Let me get these things in motion and the changes will become effectively immediately. Congratulations Commodore and give my regards to your first officer, Captain Ison.”

The screen goes blank and she sits back for a moment, and lets the promotion sink in and relishes the sensation it brings. “Well I guess I should let the crew know along with the first officer,” she says to herself. She stands up and laughs to herself at the commotion she is going to create when she walks out of her ready room.

She steps out onto the bridge and says, “May I have your attention, I have a very grave announcement to make.” The entire crew looks up from what they are doing and gives her their full attention. She walks over to the center seat, opens the intercom to the whole ship, and begins to speak. “This is the captain, I have received a message from IFT Command, and it is vital that I have everyone’s attention. Fleet Admiral Haslage has decided that the Ulysses is in need of a change and I will no longer be your captain. Commander Ison is being promoted to the rank of Captain, effective immediately.”

Captain Ison asks, “Captain, why am I being given command of the Ulysses, you haven’t done anything to deserve a demotion.”

“You’re right Captain, I haven’t been demoted and you are not being given the Ulysses, I am still in command but I have been promoted to the rank of Commodore and have been appointed to the additional position of Director of Communications for IFT Command.”

The looks on the faces of the bridge crew did not disappoint her and she loses the battle with her laughter and closes the channel to the rest of the ship. “Congratulations Captain, it is well deserved,” she says to her Number One while shaking her hand.

“Thank you, but you scared me to death with your announcement, don’t do that again,” Mandy says with a smile.

“Sorry, but I couldn’t resist the look on everyone’s faces when I made the announcement,” the commodore says.

“Ok, now I want to invite everyone on the bridge to a day out in my new holodeck program, who wants to go,” she asks. Each person looks at the other and no one answers immediately. “Oh ok, I will go by myself and leave you old sticks in the mud working on the bridge,” she says dejectedly.

“I will go with you,” Mandy says, “If not to just get back at you for your little stunt just now.” After that, several others raise their hands to go. As they walk to the turbolift, there are five people with her.

Chapter 2

The crew steps up to the entrance of holodeck four and the commodore says, “Computer, run holodeck program Gamble Alpha One.” The computer works through the program and says, "Gamble Alpha One loaded, you may enter when ready." They look at each other and enter the field that opens the door.

As the door opens they gasp involuntarily at the beauty in front of them, the mountain they are standing on is covered in green grass and a forest and they can see a building within walking distance. Captain Ison turns to her superior officer, "What is that building and what are we doing here?"

The commodore smiles and says, "It's a secret, we have to go there to find out and play it to the end. This is going to be great."

They begin walking towards the building enjoying the sights and sounds of the area. Suddenly a loud growl comes from behind them, a deep, resonant sound that makes them turn quickly to see a large cat watching them. The cat stands there staring at them as they stare back, each wondering what the other is thinking. After what seems like forever, the cat turns and slowly fades back into the trees.

The commodore laughs nervously and says, “I don’t remember programming in that mountain lion, or any cat for that matter.”

“Maybe you just forgot, or gave the program parameters for its own invention,” her XO says hopefully. “Yes, that must be it,” the commodore says with mock cheerfulness, then says to herself, “I didn’t give the computer that kind of leeway.”

“Well, that was exciting, let’s see what’s next,” Captain Ison says happily.

They continue walking down the trail and enjoy the fresh air and plants, forgetting the scare they received just moments ago. A bird flies over their heads making them duck and laugh. The bird flies into a tree and stretches its wings displaying the brilliant blues and greens of a Macaw. “Commodore, this program is fantastic, you outdid yourself with this one,” Commander Gengo says happily.

The commodore smiles her best smile and says, “Thanks Pam, well we should get over to the building.”

They begin walking again and Captain Ison steps up next to the commodore and says, “Commodore, what’s wrong, something’s bothering you.”

“Mandy, I didn’t program any animals into this or allow the computer to add any. There’s something wrong here,” she says warily.

Mandy looks at her sharply and says, “You didn’t add these animals? Maybe we should terminate the program and run a diagnostic on the holodeck.”

“Computer, pause program,” the commodore says.

“Unable to comply,” the computer responds.

She looks at Mandy and says, “Computer, end program.”

Again, she gets, “Unable to comply.”

“Computer, Arch,” Mandy demands getting the attention of the other members of the team.

They gather around in time to hear the computer respond, “You may not exit until you have finished the game.”

“Well, that sounds pretty determined to keep us here,” the commodore says.

“What should we do? We can’t keep going with the lions in here,” Captain Ison says.

Commodore Gamble looks at her and replies, “Mandy, I don’t see that we have any choice, we can either stand here and pound on the trees or continue the program to the end.”

No one feels the need to reply so they continue on the path towards the buildings. As they walk, they hear the animals in the bushes following along. They catch glimpses of stripes once in awhile, plus the soft growls from the lions.

They finally reach the building and the door opens itself to the surprise of the crew. They look at each other and the commodore leads the way into the building, not knowing what else to do. As soon as Ensign Rose walks through the entrance, the door slams shut.

Captain Ison observes, “It seems that we are going to finish out the game in here and not be given an option of levels.”

Lt. Perez looks at her and snaps, “Well, this isn’t a video game or whatever they called it in the past, but I feel like I’m Puck Man.”

Ensign Rose laughs and says, “David, I think that was called Pac Man.”

“Now that we have them exactly where they want us, we need to find out the rules,” the commodore says.

“Computer, if this is a game, what are the rules,” she asks.

The computer replies, “The rules are to survive the game.”

She looks at everyone with a disgusted look and says, “Yes computer, we figured that out, but can you be a little more specific on the actual rules?”

“You must find all the clues and solve all puzzles to win the game. Clues will be marked with flashing lights. Game will not end until all puzzles are successfully solved, no matter how long it takes,” the computer announces.

Are we allowed to leave the building or are all clues within this confine,” the captain asks.

“The game will begin now, you will find all clues, and puzzles in this building and all solutions are also found in this confine. You will start moving now,” it demands.

At the last statement everyone looks at the commodore, “That is not a welcome development. Computer, what happens if we decide to not play,” she asks.

“You will be eliminated,” the computer states coldly.
